Parker Edward Chen, the son of Brother Ed Chen (Prox), was born 2 1/2 months too soon (30 weeks). He spent 8 months at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital’s NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and 2 months at their PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit). He spent almost 3 months at Children’s Specialized Hospital for rehab, and finally came home on May 8th, 2009. He will turn 6 years old on April 10th, 2014. He currently has medical issues that still need to be resolved.

Parker was diagnosed with CHARGE Syndrome, a genetic abnormality that occurs in 1 out of 10,000 babies. Despite this, he has surprised us everyday with his love of life, enjoying every small detail, and never letting anything get in his way. He is such a determined little fighter and an inspiration showing us how strong and capable he can be.

We encourage all Brothers to donate to and join Team Parker Chen. With strength in numbers, we can make a difference! Those that decide to join, ask your employers about their company matching program. To donate or join, visit http://marchforbabies.org/s_team_page.asp?SeId=2046396

Funds raised in March for Babies support research and programs that help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives, as well as bring comfort and information to families with a baby in newborn intensive care.

On Thursday, October 3, 2013, the brothers of the Baruch Colony of Pi Delta Psi Fraternity joined the parents of the late Private Danny Chen of the US Army, the New York chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA-NY), New York City Comptroller John Liu, and City Councilmember Margaret Chin in front of for a candlelight vigil commemorating Danny Chen’s death.

The Chinese American killed himself from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while in Afghanistan after being hazed and racially taunted by his fellow soldiers.

His case has become a rallying point for many in the Asian American community. Eight soldiers faced court martial in the case and received various punishments including dismissal from the Army and ten months in prison.

In interviews with reporters, brothers said that they were surprised to realize that many of them had attended the same schools as Danny while growing up in New York City, and pledged to fight for legislation and programs such as cultural sensitivity and awareness education in the armed forces and police so that an incident like Danny Chen does not happen again.
