The History of the PSU Associate Chapter

Pi Delta Psi was founded at the Pennsylvania State University on April 19th 2003. To this day, the brothers of Penn State continue to exemplify an allegiance to the ideas of academic excellence, cultural awareness, righteousness through philanthropy and loyalty.

From that grateful day, these men became the 15th house established of the Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc. These eight men knew that their task of changing the stereotypical Asian image would ever be evolving. Slowly through their hard work of promoting and educating the community has positively impacted those around the PSU campus.

“Penn State is a multi-campus public research university that improves the lives of the people of Pennsylvania, the nation, and the world through integrated, high-quality programs in teaching, research, and service.
Our instructional mission includes undergraduate, graduate, professional, and continuing and distance education informed by scholarship and research.

Our research, scholarship, and creative activities promote human and economic development through the expansion of knowledge and its applications in the natural and applied sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities, and professions. As Pennsylvania's land-grant university, we also hold a unique responsibility to provide access, outreach, and public service to support the citizens of the Commonwealth and beyond. We engage in collaborative activities with industrial, educational, and agricultural partners here and abroad to generate, disseminate, integrate, and apply knowledge.”

Our Slice of the Pi
The four pillars of Pi Delta Psi are Academic Achievement, Cultural Awareness, Righteousness, and Friendship/Loyalty. Briefly describe how your chapter has upheld and promoted these 4 objectives since inception.

Academic Achievement

After all the main objective of any college student entering the Penn State University should be to succeed academically. The Pi Delta Psi brothers of Penn State take heed no exception to this trend. We as a fraternity prioritize the future of our brothers. Brothers in Penn State University often participate in group study sessions where the brothers sit down to joke and laugh together but also, most importantly, learn together. In Penn State we exercise a strict academic standard. Brothers who fall beneath this measurement are required to diminish participation from Greek activities in order to focus on their studies.

Cultural Awareness

For the Pennsylvania State Associate Chapter of Pi Delta Psi, Cultural Awareness is the crux of our identity. We are known throughout campus for our famous Lion Dance performances. This year we will be dancing for various restaurants, schools, and performances. Last year our performances were recognized by various newspaper lines. Our cultural contributions are also demonstrated by both our leadership and participation in numerous Asian American clubs and organizations. These organizations often turn to Pi Delta Psi for help in performances and events.

Righteousness through Philanthropy

As brothers of Pi Delta Psi, the Pennsylvania State University understands the necessity of giving back to the community. We exhibit great enthusiasm while participating in various philanthropies. Last semester we raised thousands of dollars for THON. THON, the nation’s largest student run philanthropy partakes in an annual event where students dance for 46 consecutive hours to raise awareness for children with cancer.

Each semester, PSU Pi Delta Psi takes several road trips, traveling hours at a time to canning locations where the brothers can raise money for THON’s cause. In addition, the Pi Delta Psi takes part in running and contributing to several blood drives. Brother’s give both their services and their blood to the Red Cross. Last semester the Penn State brothers joined with Toys for Tots to help wrap and sort gifts that would be delivered to underprivileged children.

Friendship/Loyalty through Brotherhood

When it all comes down to it, what is Pi Delta Psi without brotherhood?

Friendship and Loyalty are critical in maintaining our unity. If not by our weekend adventures, the brothers of Penn State find themselves together for almost everything: eating, sleeping, and studying. Brothers demonstrate an uncanny level of trust amongst one another, a bond which cannot be broken. We further strengthen our bonds through Pi Delta Psi each semester by going on weekend road trips. In the past year alone, brothers traveled to universities of Carnegie Melon, Ohio State, Rutgers, RIT, and many, many more...

Chapter Goals

Describe what goals the chapter wishes to achieve this semester and how it hopes to achieve them.

While the overarching goal of our chapter is to live the mission of Pi Delta Psi, there are many tangible things our chapter would like to accomplish.

We as an establishment of Pi Delta Psi will always strive for improvement. To have improvement over the previous semester is always our fundamental goal as an Associate Chapter. What this means is that we wish to build on every aspect of cultural awareness, philanthropy, academic achievement and brotherhood.

We have a different goal however, in the community. As Pi Delta Psi, we desire to bring leadership/cultural awareness to the Asian American community of Penn State. We do this through our strong voices in various organizations and clubs. In addition our performances in cultural shows have drawn a great deal of media attention.

Though our objectives can sometimes seem lofty, these expectations are a burden shared together as one. For the brother of the Penn State University the pillars of Pi Delta Psi are incorporated as both a practice and a lifestyle.

The brothers of Penn State really know how to have a good time and show others a good time as well. Spend a little time with us and you’ll notice many personalities that are larger than life. If Greek life weren’t a big enough deal in Penn State already, we march our pride around campus deafeningly. You can find us all over the Penn State campus. We’re a part of countless organizations throughout campus and work really hard to get the Pi Delta Psi name out.

The president, Manh Tan, along with vice presidents, Harry Huang and Albert Zheng, work intimately with other groups to organize socials and mixers. When it all comes down to it though, these same brothers realize that the most crucial component of college life is to create a foundation for the career that follows it.
