The
History of the Colony at the University of California, Riverside
| |

Standing proud, the Brothers of the Riverside colony of Pi
Delta Psi... Expect nothing but the best.
|
|
The Pi Delta Psi Fraternity colony at University of California,
Riversidewas founded by 11 men coming from different backgrounds:
Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Filipino, Laos. These 11
men felt that the Asian representation on campus has been misrepresented
by other Asian organizations and wanted to make a difference.
These men felt it was their responsibility to bring back the
rightful image and show the campus, the community and bystanders
looking on the TRUE image of Asian-Americans.
This Colony at University of California, Riverside was founded
on March 30, 2002. These Charter members are the foundation
for the prosperity and continuation of Pi Delta Psi in the West
Coast. These men are proud to have come this far, and achieve
so much in so little time. They strive to be the best they can
be because they were taught by the best-of-the-best. |

The University of California,
Riverside, is one of ten UCs in the state of California.
UC Riverside is a cousin school of the infamous University
of California, Berkeley and of the University of California,
Los Angeles. Hence these three schools share the bear
as the symbol of their mascot.
The University of California, Riverside was established
in 1907 when the California State Legislature established
the Citrus Experiment Station to conduct research on the
agricultural problems of Southern California. In 1948,
the Regents approved the establishment of the College
of Letters and Science. Necessary legislation was passed
by the Academic Senate in 1951, and the college opened
for classes in February 1954. The campus was declared
a general campus by act of the Regents in 1959, with a
mandate to develop appropriate areas of study. In 1960,
the Graduate Division was established and graduate and
professional programs were added.
UCR consists of three colleges: The College of Natural
and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS), the College of Humanities
and Social Sciences (CHASS) and the College of Engineering
(COE). These colleges offer degrees ranging from Bachelor
to Doctorates. Also available is the Gray A. Anderson
Graduate School of Business and Management.
UCR is known for its research in different areas of science,
receiving millions in grants for its research. Also, our
new Science Library preserves some of the oldest and the
newest archive of magazines, books, periodicals and journals
in the country.
According to USNews.com UC Riverside is ranked 76th in
the nation of schools. (2002)
UC Riverside is ranked 3rd in the US for college campus

Our
Slice of the Pi
| |
The four pillars of Pi Delta Psi
are Academic Achievement, Cultural Awareness, Righteousness,
and Friendship/Loyalty. Briefly describe how your chapter has
upheld and promoted these 4 objectives since inception. |
| |
Academic Achievement
| |
Being the fraternitys
primary goal, we view it is a way to separate us from
other organizations. We strive to be the best we can be.
Being students, we view our education as a priority. As
a brotherhood, we have many tools that are at our disposal
to make ourselves better. We pool
all of our resources together and aid one another to achieve
our individual academic and career goals. Even
the few that we are, we have brothers that seek careers
in numerous fields such as biology, business, economics,
computer science, information systems, creative writing,
etc. |
Cultural Awareness
| |

|
Pi Delta Psi recognizes that
it is our culture that brings us together. Although
we come from a diverse array of ethnic backgrounds, what
we share is the desire to learn more about each other's
culture, as well as our own. As a cultural fraternity
we also try to educate the community so as to preventing
bias and judgmental conclusions. We
strive to better ourselves by learning the cultures of
the world.
The Colony at UCR is a part of the Asian Pacific Islander
Student Advisory Council (APISAC) and its affiliates.
Through APISAC, we have been able to help organize and
to plan Asian Pacific Islander Awareness Month. Some of
the events we have participated in are the Unity Games
and the Week of Tolerance where the brothers were involved
in the interactive Room of Hate. The Colony
at UCR has been able to work with Cultural and Educational
Programs (CEP) to produce a food sale with the Thai Student
Union. During the food sale, we were able to educate the
campus on the significance and hidden meanings behind
certain Asian cuisines.
In addition to working with school-sponsored organizations,
the Colony at UCR has worked with other Greek organizations
such as alpha Kappa Delta Phi in co-producing a Domestic
Violence Workshop focused on Asian Americans. During this
workshop, we were able to define domestic violence, discuss
the various forms of domestic violence where both women
and men are victims, introduce help-lines and aids to
victims, and to break down cultural barriers with the
audience. |
Righteousness through Philanthropy
| |
Pi Delta Psi believes in giving
back to the community and helping those that are less
fortunate. We have helped our community, through community
service at churches and temples. To
be a righteous and well-rounded member of society we must
realize everyone is a part of it. We have done
projects across Southern California to provide a sense
of pride and support for the community at large. To provide
the people with the idea that there are still young Asian
men out there that care about others, besides themselves,
and are righteous enough to give back a little of what
they have. Our philanthropy has proven to the nation,
coast-to-coast, that Pi Delta Psi has shaped boys to righteous
men.
By volunteering and giving back
to the community we learn a great deal about ourselves
and our culture. This year, the Brothers of Pi
Delta Psi helped at Wat Thai in Hollywood during Songkran,
the Thai New Year. We were able to connect with the community,
monks, and laity, eat good food, and participate in the
annual water fight. By volunteering at the Wat Thai we
were able to help the temple collect donations to be sent
to Thailand and to learn more about the Thai culture.
In addition to helping at local temples and churches,
the Colony at UCR has worked with disabled children at
Camp Footprints. Working with the children reminded us
of how fortunate we are and how much we take for granted. |

|
"Each friend represents
a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive,
and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born,"
-- Anais Nin.
The brotherhood of Pi Delta Psi
is like none other. We may be brothers with different
mothers but we have created a bond so tight that not even
one drop of water can slip through. Different worlds may
be created through time, but we merge them together as
one through the strength of brotherhood.
It does not matter if we come from different backgrounds,
schools, or countries. As we live in this world, and through
our friendship and loyalty, we become a part of an everlasting
brotherhood. We have brothers coming and going nationwide,
and without a moments hesitation, we would gladly
give our beds, sheets, blanket, and shirts off our backs
if a brother needed it.
Anyone can join a fraternity and say that they are in
a brotherhood, and yet not really understand the true
meaning of brotherhood. Pi Delta
Psi at UCR, and nationwide, creates a bond like no other.
We have dinner together as ONE brotherhood at least once
a week, and we do many other activities throughout the
quarter. We take the time to know one another, so we are
proud to call one another a BROTHER.

Chapter
Goals
| |
Describe what goals the chapter wishes
to achieve this semester and how it hopes to achieve them. |
| |
| |
Participating in community service, holding Asian awareness
events, and holding social events are goals of any chapter,
but we feel that going beyond and doing the little extra
things around campus, and helping students in academic
difficulty, we can prove to be more that what we say in
writing. As they say, actions speak much louder than words
do. By doing what we say, we hope to gain better recognition
around the university, its students and faculty, the community
around us and hopefully throughout the city. Through this,
we hope to find new potential brothers that will carry
the chapter to new territory and beyond. As
Brothers of Pi Delta Psi, we hope to create paths where
there were no paths before. |
