The History of the Kappa Chapter
In the spring of 1998, five students successfully chartered Pi Delta Psi into Cornell University, thereby bringing an Asian Interest fraternity into an Ivy League institution for the first time. On the morning of April 25th, 1998, Frank Hsieh, Wellie Chiang, Hyoung Kyu Oh, Li Liang and Michael Chang, were formally initiated into this fraternity with the purpose of strengthening Asian-American representation on this campus. Today, we, the brothers of Pi Delta Psi, continue to make progress towards their vision through academic achievement, cultural education and community service. We stand together as we strive in the direction of our ideals, while finding strength in unity.

Founded in 1837, Cornell University has been a leading institution of higher education for over a century. Since its establishment, Cornell has grown in both prestige and size. Many notable individuals have been affiliated with this university, including twenty-seven Nobel Prize laureates, three Pulitzer Prize winners and one Crawford Prize Winner. Today, Cornell's campus covers 745 acres of land, including over 260 major buildings, and 19 member libraries, which contain over 6.8 million volumes of work. With over 70 formal majors offered, and over 235 million dollars in federal research grants, Cornell continues to rank among the best universities in the nation.

Our Slice of the Pi
The four pillars of Pi Delta Psi are Academic Achievement, Cultural Awareness, Righteousness, and Friendship/Loyalty. Briefly describe how your chapter has upheld and promoted these 4 objectives since inception.

Academic Achievement
Over the last year, we have taken many strides towards this particular foundation of our fraternity. In order to balance the workloads of school and fraternity life, the Kappa Chapter created a chairman to facilitate the demanding schedules of our brothers. Pi Delta Psi ranked 13 out of Cornell's 26 fraternities in cumulative GPA, the semester that the Academic Chair was created. We are also proud to say that all of our Alumni are either pursing higher education, or prominent in the work force.

Cultural Awareness
As one of our primary goals, we've made efforts towards the cause of Cultural Awareness by participating in cultural events on campus, inviting performance groups to Cornell, and organizing events of our own. Each year, the Kappa Chapter participates in Cornell's Lunar New Year's Festival by organizing a table of sample games from Asia. We've organized a Self-Defense workshop in response to an attack on an Asian American student on campus. We've also sponsored such groups as "Feedback" with Dennis Kim from "I was Born with Two Tongues" to perform during Asian American Heritage Week.

Righteousness through Philanthropy

Although we are an Asian Interest Fraternity, the Kappa Chapter is dedicated to aiding the community regardless of ethnic background, which includes participation in the Cornell Phonathon and volunteer work with the Salvation Army, Lakeside nursing home, OnSite volunteer services, Into the Streets, Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen, Mapel Syrup festival, Cabin Fever, Into The Night, and the Ithaca Walkathon. During our community service projects, we have come across many people that have never interacted with Asian Americans. By serving the greater Ithaca community, we have found that our work has helped break negative stereotypes surrounding Asian Americans. Furthermore, Cornell PDPsi is proud to be awarded, 2 years running, the Greek award from the University for highest participation in the Cornell Phonathon.

Friendship/Loyalty through Brotherhood
Perhaps our most important ideal, brotherhood is what makes everything we do possible. Although we hold events such as lineage dinners and semi-formal banquets that exemplify our unity, brotherhood is not a virtue that can be created by simply holding events. Rather, we have found that our unity comes from our experiences together, those that we've enjoyed as well as those that we've had to endure. Proudly, we can say that each brother at Cornell knows that he always has the support of the fraternity behind him.

Chapter Goals
Describe what goals the chapter wishes to achieve this semester and how it hopes to achieve them.

Our goals for the future are to improve the ways by which we strive towards the 4 pillars of this fraternity. Regarding Academic Achievement, the Kappa Chapter is preparing to increase the role of the Academic Chair in order to provide a way for our brothers to succeed in school while being active in the fraternity. The brothers at Cornell also plan on continuing active participation and organization of cultural events on campus. We plan to further our involvement in these activities by working closer with student organizations. We also plan on increasing the amount of philanthropy we do by increasing our service hours requirement and inviting others to help participate in our community service projects. Finally, we will seek diligent and capable men who agree with our ideals as potential members for our future Eta Pledge Class.
